Sermon by Rev. James Harrison Nixon
Today in our nation we see a decline in those who seek Jesus, we see them fleeing our churches and prayer groups. Some chalk it up as to be a Prodigal Son scenario, yet they deny the real reason to why this is happening. It is a great lie that is being told by the actions of those who claim to be Christian. So many that want to talk one way yet live another, if you’re a Christian you’re a Christian everyday not just Sunday or Christmas. It doesn’t help that even those that stand in the pulpit are doing the same thing. Yet think about it, is this a new thing? No there has always been those that have tried to profit off of God. As the question I have asked many times implies here, how many Christians if served up to the courts for our faith would be convicted?
Therefore when thou doest thine alms, do not sound a trumpet before thee, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and in the streets, that they may have glory of men. Verily I say unto you, They have their reward.
(Matthew 6:2 King James)
The verse was to those who truly wanted to and truly did follow the Commandments given to Moses and the Israelites. The Pharoses was a Jewish religious order or Priest who had control of the Temple. The Pharisees were successors of the Assideans or Chasidim who were the Godly Men of the Hebrews before and in Babylon, when they returned when Cyrus allowed them to be a free nation again is when we see the development in the Pharoses. They claimed and hung to the Law so much that they became blind to the fact that they were hurting themselves. Some of the things that happened due to the Pharisees and their mightier than though attitude.
- Temple Riots against the Romans
- Denying the Prophecy of the Messiah
- The Destruction of the Temple
Those three things alone sum up the leadership of the Pharoses, even before Jesus came into Jerusalem there was deadly riots inside the entrance of the Temple. The reason that Pilot was brought to Israel was partly due to this as well. Many Jews and Romans lost their lives during those riots. As well we all know what the Pharoses did to Jesus, who word for word meet the prophecy as the Messiah.
O hypocrites, Esaias prophecied well of you, saying, This people draweth neere vnto me with their mouth, and honoureth me with the lips, but their heart is farre off from me. But in vaine they worship me, teaching for doctrines, mens precepts.
(Matthew 15:7-9 Geneva)
So not only in Matthew 15:7-9 talk about the issues and the problems of the Pharisees, we get a warning about one thing we should not do. We should not and never make our ideas as men into a false doctrine and claim them to be from God. See many religions do this and create a cycle of false teachings from all of the false preaching. We are called to be children of God, we are not called to be Religious but we should be consumed by the Spirit. So here is the issue we have a catechism in the Christin Faith, with many religions trying to teach one faith is nonsense! Most of them if not all of them are wrong and those that say they are Non-Denominational are kidding themselves. Down to the core we have three branches of the Christian tree which are:
As well those three argue with each other and all three have their own branches as well to the Christian Family Tree. When we should do though is cut this tree down and return to the root of this tree. We should learn and teach the Old Testament as the Promise that it is. The Promise of the coming of the Convent of the Holy Spirit, one that was for the world not just the Jews. We should focus on this, because it seems that we have now all sum combed to Idols. God spoken into us not to make idols in his image, every church does these things. We can literally take a highlighter and highlight for each religion many things that the Gospels and the Apostles tell us to do and not to do that the modern churches are failing at. There is far too many for me to even list here.
Wo therefore be vnto you, Scribes and Pharises, hypocrites, because ye shut vp the kingdome of heauen before men: for ye your selues go not in, neither suffer ye them that would enter, to come in.
(Matthew 23:13 Geneva)
As well an issue that we also have beside the church leaders are those that claim to be Christian yet act not the part. They speak of hate towards groups and spew false claims amongst nations. Remember we are told that God places all world leaders, good or bad. We are to honor them as it is God’s will, remember Daniel a faithful servant of God acted this out for 70 years for four kings. We as real Christians should step up and not just spread the word by mouth but by actions. We should step up and build our communities, help those that are homeless and poor. We should take care of the widows and the sick. There is no excuse for us as Christians to harbor any form of hate.
If any man say, I loue God, and hate his brother, he is a liar: for how can he that loueth not his brother whom he hath seene, loue God whom he hath not seene?
(1 John 4:20 Geneva)
So as we see if we hate our brother, meaning one another then we cannot love God. Yes hate in this sense does not mean an extreme dislike. Hate means you do not like them at all, see even a stranger we should show good will towards. We should not throw out those because we do not know their name, we should embrace them all. Just as Jesus allowed everyone to hear him and speak with him so should we. We should do nothing that creates barriers to keep people out or push them away. At the same time we need and must work around the barriers that the secular world places on us. They can strip prayer out of the school or take down the angels as Christmas decorations. Yet they cannot take the living word off of our lips and out of our hands.
In closing the secular world does enough to hurt the images of Christians around the world. So we as Christians should not help the Devil attack us by acting in an earthly way, we must always walk with Jesus as his vessel and disciple of this world. We have the message and the blue print to not be a hypocrite, it is easy to follow and plan to read. We must take a step into a direction as a nation, not a political stance but a spiritual stance. We must stand up for the workers as they are becoming modern slaves. Our society is falling down into the Sodom and Gomorra syndrome. We must take a stand against the human sex slave that is taking our children away from their families and making them items instead of human. We need to attack the homeless situation by providing shelters, we have enough homes that are abandoned to end homelessness with some still left over.
And he opened his mouth and taught them, saying, Blessed are the poore in spirit, for theirs is the kingdome of heauen. Blessed are they that mourne: for they shall be comforted. Blessed are the meeke: for they shall inherite the earth. Blessed are they which hunger and thirst for righteousnes: for they shalbe filled. Blessed are the mercifull: for they shal obteine mercie. Blessed are the pure in heart: for they shall see God. Blessed are the peace makers: for they shal be called the children of God. Blessed are they which suffer persecution for righteousnes sake: for theirs is the kingdome of heauen. Blessed shall ye be when men reuile you, and persecute you, & say all maner of euill against you for my sake, falsely.
(Matthew 5:2-11 Geneva)
